Hi, I'm Rameya Shanmugavelayutham
Rameya Shanmugavelayutham, LCSW
Mental Health Consultant, New Light Therapist
I'm passionate about helping others become the best version of themselves and firmly believe that therapy can be the catalyst for healing and growth. Whether it's working with children, parents, couples or families, my approach is authentic, thoughtful, and compassionate. I understand that individuals know themselves best and seek to empathize and walk alongside each client in their journey.
My foundations lie in infant and early childhood work which informs my practice. Therapy can involve toggling between the past and present to understand how current behaviors and choices may be adaptations based on past circumstances. I provide an open, accepting, and non-judgmental space to reflect at a pace comfortable for each individual. My goal is to facilitate enduring change allowing my clients to walk in this world with a sense of joy, confidence, and purpose.
I earned my B.A. in Spanish Language and Literature at Loyola University Chicago along with a B.A. in International Studies, also at Loyola. My MSW is from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and I have an Infant Mental Health Certificate from the Erikson Institute.
My specialty areas include early child development, infant mental health, Trauma, parenting/family concerns, child behavioral concerns, identity development, attachment and relationship concerns, and culturally-informed practice. My professional memberships include the National Association of Social Workers, Illinois Association of Infant Mental Health and the Institute of Muslim Mental Health.
